Karpuravalli
Karpuravalli's scientific name is Plectranthus Amboinicus and also known as Indian Borage in English. The leaves are very soft and tender. If it is chewed raw, the juice produces an astringent taste. This plant needs sun to grow and frequent watering is also required during hot summer months for the leaves to stay fresh and healthy.
My grandmother used to say that this is a herbal plant. She used to say that it helps to alleviate cold and cough, reduces nasal congestion and sore throats, helps to digest if stomach upset and many people used it in cooking and flavoring of dishes.
Dad too recently said it is good to inhale during bad flu and wheezing as it helps to clear the chest / lung congestion. I personally know friends who keep this plant to ensure the mosquitoes don't come around.
So in remembrance of my late granny and to create natural herbs at home, I have planted in a small pot. They are happy plants and always seem to be smiling at me. They smell good and fresh indeed.
My Karpuravalli plant is a very beautiful, compassionate and kind soul. She has made me realize that we can be soft and tender in character but also be useful to others. Reach out to the needy and attend to their needs. When someone is down in life, pull up the individual and heal them. That is what Community Service is all about. Compassion and Kindness take us a long way in life.
Happy Tuesday, folks!
